These days it seems bedding is all about threadcount, but what is threadcount really telling you? By focussing only on threadcount you can miss the bigger picture and not necesarily get sheets that are any softer, more comfortable or longer lasting. A high number means thin threads have been used, theoretically giving a thinner and smoother sheet and when done well, this can be a very comfortable sheet. But a high number at a low price means something is likely too good to be true, as manufacturers scrimp somewhere to be able to put a high number on the package. For a better judge of the overall quality of the sheets, take a few more things than simply threadcount into consideration. When you shop for new sheets ask a few questions: What are they made of? How do the sheets feel now? How will they feel once I’ve been using them a while? How long will they last and how do I care for them properly?
What are they made of?
All of the sheets that we make are made of 100% cotton muslin. We use this because it is breathable, comfortable, durable and good value. Threadcount is not much use in describing muslin. We are not trying for a thinner nor a smoother sheet, but instead a thicker sheet with a cosy, comfortable texture that is still very soft. For most of our sheets we start with unbleached cotton and do the sewing and dying ourselves - locally of course.
How do they feel now?
Most of our bedding is pre-washed and pre-shrunk, and not packaged, so that if you are in the store you can touch it and see what it really feels like. Of course, on the web that's a bit difficult, but if you order swatches we'll send you actual little pieces of our fabric so you can both see and feel it. Muslin is thicker and more textured than most fabric used for bedding so it might feel a bit different than what you are used to for sheets. We’re pretty sure that if you try it, you’ll like it.
How will they feel once I’ve been using them a while?
Our sheets just get better and softer with age, in the store we have some pillowcases of varying ages so you can see how they wear. Again, on the web this is a tough thing to explain. We use a clothing fabric to make our sheets so perhaps if you think of your favourite old shirt and the way it has just gotten more comfortable with age you might get the idea.
How long will they last and how do I care for them properly?
The life of your sheets will depend on care and how often you use them. Basic care for our sheets is: Cold water/Hot Dryer. It can’t get much easier than that. Follow these instructions and your sheets should last a long, long time.
